Our company name, “Fassisi,” is a made-up word. It refers to the founder of the Christian Franciscan Order, “Francis of Assisi,” who is still considered the patron saint of animals and the environment.

In 1182, Francis—whose real name was Giovanni Bernardone—was born in Assisi to a wealthy merchant family. After a battle, he was taken prisoner and fell seriously ill. When he returned in 1203, he had become a different person and set out to do good.
Francis of Assisi lived in the woods or in monasteries and took joy in nature. He loved flowers, plants, and, above all, animals.

As an itinerant preacher, Francis of Assisi traveled to Dalmatia, France, and Spain. Even during his lifetime, numerous monasteries were established there, where he repeatedly preached, among other things, the importance of treating people, animals, and nature with respect. Shortly before his death (1226), poor and nearly blind, he wrote one final hymn of praise. In it, he calls on all people to love creation with all its beings—plants and animals alike.
